Love+ & Otaku Me

The installation “Window” creates a mythology of parallel realities: Simulated, artificial, earthy and clinical, they intrigue and captivate the observer.
The artist duo examines obsessions, desire and subcultures with this installation that consists of five double-windows: A 1.8 x 3 m printed Plexiglas pane and a framed video screen, displaying loops of ca 12 min long films. A variety of sounds – sighs, moans, crazy laughter, a little-girl voice, the winning-tune of gaming machines – merge in an evocative ensemble. The work resembles a storefront – behind the rows of colourful, patterned windows, peepshow glimpses into and sounds of parallel worlds emerge from video screens. Here, sexuality oscillates between a common commodity and a promise that merges virtual experiments, ritual and love.
The starting point for the videos was the artists’ recordings of the fantasy underworld of Tokyo and the Japanese Otaku culture, in which animation and role play dominate completely. Window takes a look at a game of identities, where individuals and their avatars absolve themselves and penetrate the world of parallel objects and phenomena. The art work explores fantasies through a screen of the commercial, of sub- and trash-cultures. The borders between body and projection, fantasy and reality, the ephemeral and the tangible no longer exist.
